Classes

Call at the store (518-861-0038) to get more info or to sign up. A deposit is required to hold your spot for the class. Most classes require a minimum of 3 students. If we do not have enough students sign up, we will refund your class fee or reschedule the class. In the event of class cancellation by The Spinning Room (due to snow or tsunami, etc.) your fee will be refunded. Some classes require a bit of "homework" beforehand. More details will be given upon registration. As always, you enjoy a 10% discount on materials for all classes.

Beginner Knitting!

WHEN: Upcoming session: Saturdays, July 9 & 16, 9-10:30 & August 6, 1-2:30 (note the different time for the 3rd class)

Beginner knitting at The Spinning Room has a new look! Because of the recent high demand for beginner knitting - it is taking on a new, 3 session format. Robin will take you through yarn types, yarn labels, casting on, knitting, purling, ribbing, casting off, fixing basic mistakes and getting you started on your first project -- a ribbed scarf. After these three sessions, you'll be well on your way to knitting up a storm!

MATERIALS: Size 7 or 8 knitting needles; worsted weight yarn (approx 300-400 yards) These can be purchased at the shop at the time of class if you don't already have them. (Don't forget, you will receive a 10% discount on class supplies purchased at the shop!)



JUNE 2011 CLASSES

Continental Knitting & Norwegian Purl

WHEN: Saturday, June 4, 10-11:30am
INSTRUCTOR: Trudi Jacobson
FEE:$15 fee

Trudi will show you the basics of Continental knitting (holding the yarn in your left hand and "picking" instead of throwing the yarn) including knitting and purling, as well as an alternative way of purling, the Norwegian Purl. This is a great technique to learn if you want to do two-color knitting.

MATERIALS: Worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles (You will be making a swatch to practice the various techniques)

HOMEWORK: None!

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner (very comfortable with knit and purl)


Yvette Hat (Roositud technique)

WHEN: Saturday, June 4, 12:30-2:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Trudi Jacobson
FEE:$20 fee

Another new knitting technique - Roositud, which is a method of embroidering while you are knitting (not afterward). A beautiful hat from the Vintage Modern Knits book.

MATERIALS: Vintage Modern Knits book; approx 200 yards sport weight yarn for main color; scraps of other colors for embroidery (sport weight will be doubles but you can also use a heavy worsted held single); Size 1 16" circular for ribbing; size 3 16" circular and size 3 DP's for body of hat.

HOMEWORK: None!

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner (very comfortable with knit and purl)


Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom

WHEN: Tuesdays, June 7, 14 & 21, 11am-3pm
INSTRUCTOR: Darla Mohr
FEE:$100 fee (includes loom rental)

Learn to weave using a rigid heddle table loom! Darla will take you through the steps of basic weaving to make a table runner.

MATERIALS: One ball Encore worsted (to match the neutral color that will be pre-warped - and is included in the class fee).

HOMEWORK: Review general weaving instructions found HERE. (You will need to scroll past the assembly instructions first!)

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner


Fixing Mistakes

WHEN: Thursday, June 9, 6-7:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Robin Barbera
FEE:$15 fee

Learn to fix your own mistakes! A great class for beginners who feel frustrated that they can't fix it when things go wrong. You'll learn about un-knitting, picking up dropped stitches and more!

MATERIALS: Worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles

HOMEWORK: Cast on 20 stitches and knit a 4" swatch in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row)

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner (know how to knit and purl)


Market Bag

WHEN: Saturday, June 11, 12-1:30pm OR Tuesday, June 21, 10-11:30am
INSTRUCTOR: Jana Miller
FEE:$20 fee

A Spinning Room original pattern designed by Jana! This is a great cotton market bag that has an easy lace pattern. **TheJune 11 class filled up within 5 minutes, so we quickly scheduled another. Spaces available in the June 21 class!**

MATERIALS: 2 skeins Cascade Sierra or approx 385 yards of another worsted weight cotton (Noro Taiyo would be great for this too!); size 7, 24" circular needle.

HOMEWORK: Cast on 125 stitches, join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Work in stockinette stitch in the round (knit every round) until piece measures 2 inches from beginning.

Morning Surf Scarf

WHEN: Saturday, June 18, 10am-11:30am Robin Barbera
FEE:$15 fee

This popular class is back! The drop stitches make a gorgeous pattern. Knit in Tussah Silk DK makes it a perfect weight for spring and summer knitting.

MATERIALS: 3 skeins Tussah Silk DK (or 300 yards other dk weight yarn); size 6 needles

HOMEWORK: none!

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner (very comfortable with knit and purl)


Spinning 101

WHEN: Thursdays, June 23, 30 and July 7, 6-8pm
INSTRUCTOR: Mary Oates
FEE:$60 fee (plus $5 materials fee)

Learn to spin your own yarn using a spinning wheel! Mary will take you through all the basics from treading to drafting to spinning to plying. So much fun and satisfying to make your own yarn!

MATERIALS: Fee includes use of a spinning wheel and materials fee includes 4oz fiber. Additional fiber can be purchased at a 10% dicount.

HOMEWORK: none!

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner! No experience necessary!


Slipper Socks

WHEN: Saturdays, June 25 & July 9, 10-11:30am
INSTRUCTOR: Trudi Jacobson

These wonderfully colorful socks are a perfect summer knitting project since they are small and portable! This is another pattern from the book Color by Krisin (which you will need for the class - we have them at the shop!) and can be made from Cascade 220 or Ella Rae Classic Superwash.

JULY 2011 CLASSES

Socks 101

WHEN: Thursdays, July 7 & 21, 6-8pm
INSTRUCTOR: Robin Barbera
FEE:$35 fee

The perfect portable project for summer! Robin will take you through the basics of knitting socks from casting on to double pointed needles, joining in the round, heel turn and gussets!

MATERIALS: size 5 double pointed needles, 200 yards worsted weight yarn (or more depending on the size you are making.

HOMEWORK: None!

Introduction to Knitting

WHEN: Saturdays, July 9 & 16, 9-10:30 & August 6, 1-2:30 (note different time for the third class)

Learn all the basics of knitting....knitting, purling, ribbing and even some tips for fixing mistakes. All leading up to starting a basic ribbed scarf. No experience necessary!

Blooming Cotton Scarf

WHEN: Saturday, July 9, 11:30-1:30

We're bringing back this very popular class! A wonderful cotton wrap for those cool summer nights. Learn some slip stitch techniques while knitting in the round to create this pretty honeycomb pattern.

8-Hour Baby Blanket

WHEN: Thursday, Junly 14, 6-8pm

An adorable baby blanket, perfect to give as a shower gift. And quick to knit, too which makes it twice as nice. Great for a next-project for beginners, but more advanced knitters too.

MATERIALS: size 13, 24" circular needle; 4 balls Encore Worsted

2 Socks on 1 Circular Needle

WHEN: Thursdays, July 21 & August 6, 6-7:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Liz Cassidy

Lots of requests for this class! For all of you sock knitters who want to learn an alternative way to knit socks (aside from using double points). Learn to knit 2 socks at a time on one long circular needle using the magic loop method.

MATERIALS: Approx 350-400 yards fingering weight yarn; size 2 40" circular needles.

HOMEWORK: None!

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner (very comfortable with knit and purl; must have experience knitting socks)


Steeked Wrist Warmers

WHEN: Saturdays, July 30 & August 6, 10-11:30am

Another popular class that is back! Have you been curious about steeking (knitting in the round, then cutting the fabric - yes CUTTING! - to make a button band) but afraid to try? This is the perfect project to try it out!

Clay Beads

WHEN: Saturday, July 30 1-3pm
INSTRUCTOR: Trudi Jacobson

The clay button class was such a hit, we're doing a clay beads class! Trudi will show you the basics of working with the femo clay to make (and bake) beads that can be used to adorn your knitting or to make stich markers. How fun is that?!?!?!

MATERIALS: Included in $5 materials fee.

AUGUST 2011 CLASSES

Wet Felting

WHEN: Saturday, August 6, 9am-12pm
INSTRUCTOR: Yvette Terplak
FEE:$35 fee

This popular class is back! Yvette will take you through the basics of wet felting (using water, soap and agitation on roving to make a felted material). The last class made great bird houses but you can choose to make a placemat, table runner or cell phone case too! The possiblities with wet felting are endless -- try it, NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
